A towel with a seven-hundred-year story
Long before the fluffy terry towel arrived — and long before "quick-dry travel towel" became a category — Turkish weavers were producing a piece of cloth so useful, so light and so well-designed for daily bathing that it lasted, essentially unchanged, from the Ottoman hammams of the fifteenth century all the way to a beach bag in Bondi. Born in the hammam: the origin of the Turkish cotton towel
Turkish bath culture — the hammam — has its roots in the Roman thermae, but it was the Ottomans who turned it into a full social ritual, and the peshtemal was the piece of textile that made the ritual work. In a marble bath house you needed a cloth that could do several things at once: wrap loosely around the body without dragging, soak up steam and water without becoming heavy, dry fast on the marble bench between two bathers, and cost little enough that the bath house could keep a hundred in circulation.
Turkish weavers answered with a flat-woven cotton towel, roughly 90 by 180 centimetres, with hand-tied tasselled ends. No pile. No terry. Just a light, tight weave that opens flat, drapes soft, folds down small and dries in a fraction of the time a bulky towel would need. The peshtemal spread from Istanbul to the Aegean coast and the Mediterranean rim, then quietly — much later — to spa towns in Europe, then to travellers who kept discovering that this "Turkish beach towel" they'd picked up in a market was somehow better than the beach towel they'd left at home.
What makes a peshtemal different from a regular towel
The design choices that suited a fifteenth-century hammam turn out to be exactly the choices that suit a modern life full of gyms, pools, apartments and small boot spaces. A traditional Turkish cotton towel is:
- Flat-woven, not tufted. No fluffy pile — instead, a tight cotton weave. That's why the towel dries fast and stays hygienic between uses.
- Light and packable. Around 200 grams for a 90 × 180 cm piece — a fraction of a terry beach towel. Folds down to the size of a paperback.
- Genuinely absorbent. Cotton is cotton. It drinks water. The difference is that a peshtemal releases water back into the air fast, so it doesn't sit damp.
- Sand-free by design. A flat weave sheds sand with a shake. A terry towel holds onto every grain until the next wash.
- Softer with age. Each wash relaxes the weave. A peshtemal at year three is softer than the same peshtemal on the day you bought it.

How to care for your Turkish cotton towel
Peshtemals are famously low-maintenance, but a few habits keep them looking new for years:
- Wash cold to warm (30–40 °C) with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats the cotton fibres and reduces absorbency.
- Line-dry in the shade where possible. Australian sun is beautiful; also brutal on colour over time.
- The tassels can be trimmed. If they knot up in the wash, a light trim is fine — it doesn't affect the towel's structure.
- Rotate two towels per person if you can. Cotton lasts longer with a rest day.
- Iron only if you must. Peshtemals look best a little relaxed, not crisp.
